How Will Britain Stop Ebola From Spreading?

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Desember 2014 | 12.27

The Ebola case in Glasgow will create considerable concerns among people about its potential spread, but effective containment could make the health worker who recently returned from Sierra Leone an isolated case.

Sky's Health Correspondent Thomas Moore said close monitoring of anyone who came into contact with the patient after they became infected, as well as good practices during treatment, were key to preventing further cases.

"The key incubation period is considered to be 21 days and we have seen in other countries events where partners of people who have come down with Ebola are kept at home or monitored very closely to make sure they are not developing symptoms and there is no onward transmission," he said.

"The key point in an outbreak is to contain it, to prevent it spreading. The further it spreads the more difficult it is to contact trace people and bring the virus back under control."

Health officials have said the patient in Scotland only came into contact with one person since displaying symptoms, however the passengers who travelled on a flight from Casablanca to Heathrow and a subsequent flight from Heathrow to Glasgow with the infected person on Sunday are being traced.

The Ebola virus is not spread through ordinary social contact such as shaking hands or travelling on public transport.

Only people who have come into contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person are at risk.

Anyone who was on the flight - or has recently return from the affected arreas of West Africa - and is worried about symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat or rash is advised to stay at home and call 111 or 999.

The unnamed patient is currently being treated at a specialist infectious diseases unit at Gartnaval Hospital in Glasgow

But she will be moved to The Royal Free Hospital in London, one of five High Level Isolation units in Britain - the others are in Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and Belfast.

Scottish Nurse With Ebola Transferred To London

A Scottish nurse who has become the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the UK is being transferred to London for specialist medical care, according to Sky sources.

The woman returned to Scotland after a spell working in Sierra Leone and arrived at Glasgow Airport on a British Airways flight at around 11.30pm on Sunday.

The patient - understood to have been volunteering for Save The Children - was admitted to hospital early on Monday morning after feeling unwell and was placed into isolation at 7.50am. She is in a stable condition.

She was isolated and received treatment in the specialist Brownlee Unit for Infectious Diseases on the Gartnavel Hospital campus, before being moved to the Royal Free Hospital in London.

The hospital's infectious diseases unit is run by a dedicated team of doctors and laboratory staff and access is restricted to trained medical staff.

A specially designed tent is set up around the patient's bed so the infection can be contained while they are treated.

Anyone who is at risk through contact with the patient in transit is to be contacted and closely monitored.

The unit successfully treated another British nurse, William Pooley, who was flown home from Sierra Leone in August after contracting Ebola.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government Resilience Committee and has also spoken to Prime Minister David Cameron.

She said: "Our first thoughts at this time must be with the patient diagnosed with Ebola and their friends and family. I wish them a speedy recovery.

"Scotland has been preparing for this possibility from the beginning of the outbreak in West Africa and I am confident that we are well prepared."

She added in a news conference that the risk to other people is "extremely low to the point of negligible".

The woman travelled home via Casablanca and London Heathrow, spending around six hours in each airport before catching connecting flights.

She was vetted twice, in Sierra Leone and at Heathrow, without any signs of Ebola being detected.

Anyone who was on the Heathrow to Glasgow flight last night is asked to call 08000 858531

Contact Lost With AirAsia Flight To Singapore

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 Desember 2014 | 12.27

An AirAsia flight carrying 162 people from Indonesia to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic controllers.

Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said flight QZ 8501 lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 7.24am local time.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before contact was lost with Indonesia's Juanda International Airport in Surabaya.

The flight was expected to arrive in Singapore at 8.30am.

Officials confirmed the plane had seven crew and 155 passengers on board.

Local media reported there were 149 Indonesians, three Koreans, one Singaporean, one Briton and one Malaysian national on the plane.

Transport Ministry spokesman JA Barata said the passengers included 138 adults, 16 children and one infant.

According to air traffic control website Flight Radar, the aircraft was travelling at 32,000 ft over the Java Sea when contact was lost.

A statement on Malaysia based AirAsia's Facebook page said: "AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ 8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 0724hrs this morning.

"At the present time we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available.

"The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC. At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service."

The airline has set up an emergency call centre for family or friends of those who may have been on board the aircraft.

A statement issued by the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority said: "The Singapore Rescue Coordination Centre has offered help to the Indonesian authorities. Two C-130s are already on stand-by for this purpose.

"Crisis Management Centres have already been activated. We are working with the airline's crisis management team. A waiting area, and all necessary facilities and support have been set up for relatives and friends of the affected passengers at Changi Airport Terminal 2."

The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysia's airlines.

National flag carrier Malaysia Airlines lost two aircraft this year

Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board and on July 17 Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

:: Relatives or friends of those aboard the plane can contact the AirAsia hotline on: +62 212 985 0801.

Mourners have gathered in Indonesia's Aceh province for a memorial to mark 10 years since the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

Around 230,000 people died after a 9.3-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia's western coast triggered a series of huge waves in the Indian Ocean.

The rising waters caused devastation across the region, striking countries as far apart as Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Somalia.

The wave swept the whole of the Indian Ocean's shoreline, also hitting the coasts of India, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Maldives and Bangladesh.

Around six hours after the start of the disaster the coasts of east Africa - Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya - were struck by the wave.

Tsunami Survivors Overcome Grief With Charity

Many survivors of the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 have spent the last decade struggling to deal with grief and trauma, but some chose to channel it into helping others.

In a new documentary to be shown on Sky One this evening, Sky News has spoken to survivors who have set up charities in memory of some of the 230,000 people who died.

Kim and Tristan Peatfield were staying on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in Tangalle, with their five-year-old daughter Isabella when the tsunami hit their hotel bungalow.

Tristan was washed away and Kim was left holding Isabella.

"I think I must have been knocked out and I guess that's when I let her go - because I don't remember letting her go. I would never, never have let her go," she said.

Isabella was later found dead.

Despite their grief, the couple returned to Sri Lanka a few weeks after Isabella's funeral and set up a charity in her name to help Sri Lankan children.

"Anybody who was there would know children there lost everything, they didn't just lose a sibling or a parent or grandparents or a roof over their head - they lost everything," Kim said.

The charity is still going ten years later. In that time they have helped to rebuild Tangalle Children's Hospital and built 10 playgrounds, among other projects.

"It came out of love, not wanting to let her die, and that's what sustained us, that's what keeps the charity going," the Peatfields said.

Luke Simon works full-time on the charity that he set up after the Boxing Day tragedy.

When the wave hit he was staying with his brother Piers and three friends on the island of Phi Phi in southern Thailand.

Phi Phi was hit from both sides simultaneously - and the thin strip of land in between was engulfed.

"The sea beyond was just boiling up in front of me," Luke said.

"The tsunami turned Phi Phi into canals - the little alleyways became two and a half metres of water filled with debris - a lot of people who lost their lives, they didn't drown, they were just hit by debris."

Piers was trapped under the water as he tried to push another friend to safety. It took five days for Luke to find his body.

Luke launched the charity - the Piers Simon Appeal - at his brother's memorial service and two weeks after the tsunami he was back in Phi Phi with £10,000 to help local people.

"The charity really came about because we had received so much goodness from Thai people who helped me to find Piers," he said.

Ten years on, and the charity has now become School In A Bag, which sends schoolbags to children affected by the disaster.

"It was born out of a natural disaster - the sad circumstances of losing my brother. I always wanted to be able to help disaster-affected children, mainly because of the experience that I had picked up in the tsunami," Luke said.

"I still feel like Piers is with me now - I feel as though he's tagging along with me, except he's the reason we are doing it."

Queen Uses Speech To Hail UK Ebola Medics

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 Desember 2014 | 12.27

By Enda Brady, Sky News Correspondent

The Queen will use her Christmas message to pay tribute to medical staff who have volunteered to fight Ebola in west Africa, saying she has been "deeply touched" by their "selflessness".

Dozens of British doctors and nurses have travelled to countries like Sierra Leone to help combat the deadly epidemic.

In her Christmas message, which will be broadcast at 3pm, the Queen will say: "I have been deeply touched this year by the selflessness of aid workers and medical volunteers who have gone abroad to help victims of conflict or of diseases like Ebola, often at great personal risk."

The theme of this year's message is reconciliation and on the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Day truce in the World War One trenches, the Queen also touches on how she felt visiting the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London.

The monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the installation by artists Paul Cummins in October.

She said: "The ceramic poppies at the Tower of London drew millions and the only possible reaction to walking among them was silence.

"For every poppy, a life - and a reminder of the grief of loved ones left behind."

A total of 888,246 ceramic poppies were planted in the moat at the Tower, one for each British and Commonwealth death.

The Queen recorded her message sitting next to a table featuring separate photographs of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary.

Also present is an embossed box similar to those sent to soldiers on the frontline in 1914.

The Queen made her first Christmas broadcast in 1952, live on the radio from her study at Sandringham.

Her first televised message came five years later and she has only missed one year, 1969, when she decided the royals had featured enough on TV after an unprecedented documentary.

Online Shoppers To Break Xmas Day Records

Christmas Day online shoppers are predicted to set a new spending record splashing out an estimated £636m today.

Shoppers are expected to make 142 million visits to retail sites today - a 25% increase on last year.

Research by Experian and online retailing trade association IMRG found Britons will spend around £441,000 a minute.

"The ease of shopping online via connected devices raises the prospect of a very large amount of shopping activity on Christmas Day itself," said Experian general manager of consumer insight Giles Longhurst.

Dominic Trigg, managing director for Europe of digital advertising technology company Rocket Fuel, said: "Shopping online on Christmas Day is now a normal part of UK consumers' holiday experiences every year.

"It is clear that UK consumers now see shopping from the comfort of their own home, following Christmas Day dinner, as much of a tradition as a turkey and ham dinner."

Shoppers have already been enjoying heavy discounting as some stores began their traditional Boxing Day sales up to two days early.

Britain's retail sector has already been celebrating a record-breaking year as official figures are projecting an all-time high for sales in 2014.

The forecast from the Office of National Statistics shows that sales for the year are expected to reach £342bn - a £48bn increase since 2010.

Pre-Christmas sales are up by 5.2% compared with last year.

The gunman who shot dead two New York City police officers told passers-by to "watch what I'm going to do", moments before the attack.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said witnesses recall Ismaaiyl Brinsley asking them to follow him on Instagram, before making the chilling warning.

Instagram posts attributed to Brinsley, 28, have been described as "very anti-police".

One appears to threaten to carry out an attack in retaliation for the death of Eric Garner, who was killed in a New York officer's chokehold, sparking weeks of mass protests.

Part of the caption read: "I'm Putting Wings On Pigs Today. They Take 1 Of Ours ... Let's Take 2 of Theirs."

DNA Study To Put UK At 'Forefront Of Science'

By Emma Birchley, East of England Correspondent

The diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases and cancer could be transformed by an ambitious project that will see 100,000 complete sets of people's genes decoded.

Eleven Genomic Medicine Centres (GMCs) across England will begin work in February to collect and map the samples over a three-year period.

The initiative, known as the 100,000 Genomes Project, will help scientists and doctors understand more about specific conditions such as the rare genetic illness cystinosis, which left 24-year-old Christopher Melville needing a kidney transplant when he was just 10.

"I'm excited," he said. "Obviously the more knowledge we have, the more understanding we have of how to treat people. It leads to better development, better research and better treatment."

Samples will be taken from people like Christopher and also their parents, while cancer patients will provide both blood and tumour tissue as part of the research.

Professor Dion Morton, who will run the West Midlands GMC, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, described the work as "transformational", adding that not long ago it took eight years to decode a single person's genome.

"It's going to change the way we practice medicine (and) it's going to give us opportunities to bring new medicines to our patients.

"Historically medicine's been delivered to groups of patients with similar conditions and now we can start subdividing those groups into the exact genetic code that is really causing that condition, so target the treatment of that code and hopefully make treatment safer, more effective."

NHS England's medical director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, said the project was an achievable ambition "which positions Britain to unlock long-standing mysteries of disease on behalf of mankind".

"Embracing genomics will position us at the forefront of science and make the NHS the most scientifically-advanced healthcare system in the world," he added.

A total of 75,000 people will take part in the project.

Christopher's mother, Julie Melville, is delighted the project is about to begin.

"It feels like finally somebody is sitting up and taking note that this rare disease exists," she said.

Her hope is that gene therapy could eventually mean a cure for cystinosis sufferers like her son - one of 150 people in the UK with the disease.

It is estimated new diagnostic tests and drugs could be available as a result of the work within 15 years.

Prices At Pumps: Confusion Over Cheap Petrol

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 Desember 2014 | 12.27

Tumbling oil prices are resulting in lower petrol costs, but there are warnings the good news for drivers may not last.

With prices falling by more than 40% since June's high of $111 a barrel, there have been an increasing number of reports suggesting petrol prices across the UK could soon fall below £1 per litre - the lowest level since the end of May 2009.

Experts at the RAC believe petrol could fall to 99p a litre next year, while economists at Goldman Sachs also believe petrol could fall close to £1.

But AA president Edmund King said this possibility remained "remote".

He said: "A 6.6p-a-litre drop in the price of petrol releases a potential £3m-a-day switch of consumer spending from fuel forecourts to other businesses.

"It will also lower the cost of transporting goods, hopefully also to be passed on to customers."

Mr King went on: "However, the parallels with the 2008 crash, albeit that was a market in freefall while this one has been engineered by OPEC and could be stopped any time, carry a warning from the ghost of Christmas past.

"In 2009, a new year brought a new assessment of the market and pump prices started to rise again on January 5."

Analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also suggests petrol prices are unlikely to fall below £1-a-litre in the coming months.

But while the ONS said the price consumers pay at the pumps for petrol and diesel were "strongly related to the price of crude oil", it highlighted that price changes were "less volatile and the effect of changes in crude oil prices are delayed".

Ian Taylor, chief executive and president of Vitol, the world's largest oil trading company, told Sky News' Ian King Live that although the future was difficult to predict he believes the market "will steady up".

He said: "As you know oil traders are pretty useless at predicting price, but we sort of feel that inevitably at these price levels that several areas of the world will begin to cut back on capex (capital expenditure) and we'll see some reductions in supply and a big transfer of income to the consumers - hopefully lower petrol prices in the UK etc - and that will increase demand.

"We feel at the current prices and with Brent at $60 a barrel we should begin to see some stability, but oil has been a lot lower than this and a lot higher so it's difficult to predict just at this moment - but I do begin to believe the market will begin steady up."

He added: "It's a pretty big tax cut for every single consumer in the world and it's a huge transfer of income from oil producers to world consumers. It's pretty positive for the UK, Europe and other big consuming countries around the globe."

Petrol pump prices have plunged in the last month with the mid-November to mid-December fall the third biggest in 25 years, according to the AA.

The motoring group said that between mid-November and mid-December UK average petrol prices fell 6.6p to 116.32p a litre.

Only the October-November 2008 fall of 11.5p a litre and the August-September 2006 dip of 7.9p have been greater than the most recent decline.

The AA also said that average diesel prices have fallen 5.27p a litre to 122.16p over the mid-November to mid-December 2014 period.

And the fall does not include the very latest 2p-a-litre petrol reduction by the four biggest supermarkets which took effect on Wednesday.

Currently, south west England has the cheapest petrol, at an average of 116.1p a litre, while East Anglia has the dearest, at 117.1p.

The cheapest diesel is to be found in Northern Ireland, at 121.8p a litre, with the most-expensive in Scotland, at 122.7p a litre.

Eight Children Stabbed To Death In Cairns

Eight children have been found stabbed to death at a house in Cairns, Australia.

The children are reportedly aged between 18 months and 15 years.

Police were called to a property in the suburb of Manoora following reports of a woman with serious injuries.

During the search of the house the bodies of the children were discovered.

The 34-year-old woman, reportedly the children's mother, has received treatment for her wounds.

She is said to be in a stable condition at a hospital where she is being questioned by police.

Queensland Police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said: "As it stands at the moment, there's no need for the public to be concerned about this other than the fact that it's a tragic, tragic event.

"The situation is well controlled."

He said detectives had not yet determined the relationship between all of the children and the woman.

But Lisa Thaiday, who said she was the woman's cousin, said the children were all siblings and that the woman was their mother.

Ms Thaiday said another sibling, a 20-year-old man, came home and found his brothers and sisters dead inside the house.

She said. "We're a big family... I just can't believe it."

Cairns Post reporter Scott Forbes, at the scene, told Sky News: "I've spoken to some of the family members and they say the woman, who is the biological mother, actually has more children but the other kids weren't at home at the time so of the children she does have eight of them are now dead.

"Many of the people here are actually connected to the family or relatives of the family. They are very shocked. They said they were a happy family and were enthusiastic about Christmas.

"They've said she was a very proud mother who was very protective of her children, so everyone lining the streets here is reeling right now."

The street is in lock down and a crime scene will remain in place for at least another day, police said.

Cairns MP Michael Trout told Sky News the close-knit community was in shock over the "dreadful tragedy".

"How can anyone harm innocent children is on everyone's lips at this moment," he said.

The deaths come as Australia is still feeling the shock of the deadly siege in a Sydney cafe earlier this week.

Police stormed the building early on Tuesday morning to end a 16-hour hostage standoff in which three people were killed, including the hostage-taker.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott called the events in Cairns "heartbreaking" and acknowledged that these were "trying days" for Australia.

Jimmy Savile Abuse Victims Given Police Apology

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 18 Desember 2014 | 12.27

By Gerard Tubb, North Of England Correspondent

A police force has apologised for letting prolific sex offender Jimmy Savile slip through their net by not properly investigating him while he was alive.

North Yorkshire Police has admitted it missed opportunities to act and let down people who reported abuse by the disgraced entertainer and another man in Scarborough.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy apologised to 35 people who say they were abused in Scarborough between 1958 and 1998 by Savile or his friend Peter Jaconelli, a former mayor of the town.

Two of the alleged victims say both men attacked them.

"On behalf of North Yorkshire Police I am sorry, I am truly sorry we did not respond more effectively, we did not investigate those allegations early on," he said.

ACC Kennedy said if Savile and Jaconelli were alive they would be arrested on suspicion of child sex offences ranging from indecent assault to rape.

Savile died in 2011 before being exposed as a prolific offender who abused at least 500 children and Jaconelli died in 1999.

After Savile's crimes were made public campaigners and bloggers on the Yorkshire coast pressured the police over their claims that they had no knowledge of complaints against either Savile or Jaconelli when they were alive.

When several men came forward in March 2014 to say they had been abused by Jaconelli the force referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and began an investigation.

Nigel Ward from the North Yorks Enquirer website welcomed the apology but said more needs to be done.

"The only way to get to the bottom of this now is to have a full scale public enquiry and I would welcome that because I think there are a lot of people who have been culpable in terms of covering up and making it possible for these terrible people to get away with these offences," he said.

The IPCC has recently quizzed an unnamed serving detective sergeant from North Yorkshire Police as part of an ongoing investigation into potential misconduct over how information about Savile and Jaconelli was handled.

Both men are buried in Scarborough's Woodlands Cemetery, where Savile's grave is unmarked after his headstone was removed in 2012 while Jaconelli's prominent headstone records him as Alderman Peter Jaconelli.

Scarborough Council, which is led by Tom Fox, a former Scarborough police commander, stripped Jaconelli of his civic honours when the extent of the complaints against him were acknowledged earlier this year.

Sony Cancels Kim Jong-Un Movie After Threats

Sony Pictures has cancelled the release of controversial film The Interview, which depicts an assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

The company said the decision was made after major US theatre chains pulled out of showing the film following threats from hackers.

"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," a Sony Pictures statement said.

The studio added it was "deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company".

US investigators have now linked the Sony hacking incident to North Korea and will reveal more details later.

Sony Pictures said it stands by the makers of the film, which tells the fictional story of two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader.

A hacker group calling itself the Guardians of Peace attacked Sony Pictures and released internal emails by senior company executives.

The group said audiences would face a "bitter fate" and people living close to cinemas showing the film should leave their homes.

"We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places The Interview be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to," they said.

"Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made. The world will be full of fear.

"Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you'd better leave.)"

New York's Landmark's Sunshine Cinema earlier confirmed that the film's Thursday premiere would not go ahead.

An official at the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said there was "no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theatres within the United States".

However, police in New York and Los Angeles sad they were taking the threats "very seriously".

Taliban Aims To Relaunch Itself With Bloodbath

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 Desember 2014 | 12.27

Children. Herded down the corridors of their own school in a battery farm slaughter. More than 120 young lives cut short by a team of murderers under orders to spare only the younger kids.

Even by the standards of Pakistan's Taliban, this was an atrocity of unprecedented scale. But it cannot be seen as coming out of the blue.

The Taliban has a reputation for extreme brutality and for hating schools. According to a report from the Pakistani intelligence agencies in 2013, the movement had destroyed 1,030 schools in the west of the country over the previous four years.

The mainly Pashtun movement has its roots in rebellion against the Soviet invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan in 1979. But it has mutated, turning on its original sponsors in Islamabad and now violently pursues the drastic further Islamisation of Pakistan.

In 2010, it killed 105 spectators at a volleyball match. Dozens were killed by gunmen who swept through a church in Peshawar three years later.

But they have been driven back lately. And this has spurred their atrocities to greater levels.

A military campaign ordered by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier this year is intended to wipe the Taliban out altogether. Lately it has, from the government's perspective, been going well.

Hundreds of militants have been killed as the army has driven them back towards their heartland in the Swat valley.

The Taliban's long campaign against the central government was beginning to weaken. So it sought invigoration in horror.

Perhaps in an effort to appeal to younger recruits who may have been tempted by the propaganda coming from the Middle East, from the death cult known as Islamic State (IS).

In October, the Pakistani Taliban issued a statement that it supported IS. It did not join it.

"Oh our brothers (in IS), we are proud of you in your victories," Pakistani Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said.

"All Muslims in the world have great expectations of you ... we are with you, we will provide you with Mujahideen (fighters) and with every possible support."

Days Of Mourning Begin Over Deadliest Attack

Three days of mourning have begun after Taliban gunmen killed 132 children and nine teachers at a school in Peshawar.

The country suffered its deadliest terror attack as nine men stormed the army-run school while around 500 children and teachers were believed to be inside.

Tehreek-e-Taliban insurgents moved from room to room during the eight hour attack in what is believed to have been an act of revenge for a major military offensive in the region.

Funerals of many of the victims have already taken place with the rest to follow later.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described the attack as a "national tragedy unleashed by savages".

Sydney Cafe Siege: Two Victims Are Named

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 16 Desember 2014 | 12.27

A brilliant female barrister and a 34-year-old cafe manager have been named as the two victims of the siege in Sydney.

Mother-of-three Katrina Dawson, 38, and Tori Johnson, 34, died along with hostage-taker Man Haron Monis during a 16-hour siege at the Lindt cafe in Sydney's financial district.

At a press conference today, police revealed that three female hostages were also shot during the siege, as well as one police officer.

The three women are in a stable condition in hospital, while the officer has been treated and released.

Deputy Commisioner Catherine Burn said: "I spoke to the police officer as he was going home. His only words to me were 'I'll be back at work tomorrow'."

Ms Burn said another two women were treated for "health and welfare purposes". Reports suggested that those women were pregnant.

Monis was shot dead when specialist officers threw flash grenades into the building in the Martin Place premises at around 2.10am.

The 50-year-old Iranian refugee - who was facing charges in Australia including accessory to murder and sexual assault - was confirmed dead after being taken to hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Burn said police did not know what had motivated Monis. She declined to detail his demands.

"This is a man who had serious history of criminal offences and a history of violence," she said.

"This was a man that we do believe had some extremist views and we also believe that he was unstable."

Ms Dawson's brother told The Australian newspaper that the family is devastated by her death.

She was looking forward to a joint family holiday with another colleague and her children later this year.

Friends described her as beautiful and highly-intelligent.

Ms Dawson was held hostage alongside one of her barrister colleagues, with whom she had been having a coffee.

A statement from the New South Wales Bar Association said: "Katrina, together with two other members of the NSW Bar, were held as hostages during the incident at the Lindt Café in Phillip Street, Sydney, yesterday.

"Katrina was one of our best and brightest barristers who will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends at the NSW Bar.

"She was a devoted mother of three children, and a valued member of her floor and of our bar community."

Flags were lowered to half-staff on the landmark Harbour Bridge as Australians awakened to the surreal conclusion of the crisis.

The state's premier Prime Minister Tony Abbott  expressed disbelief that the attack could happen in Australia - a place he dubbed "a peaceful, harmonious society which is the envy of the world."

The siege ended in dramatic scenes, as a group of panicked hostages ran from the building into the arms of waiting police in the early hours of Tuesday morning local time.

Specialist police then swooped on the gunman, who was armed with a pump-action shotgun.

A series of loud explosions were heard at the scene before glass shattered onto the pavement from a nearby window.

NSW Premier Mike Baird described the incident as "a vicious, horrendous attack in the heart of our city".

Speaking at a news conference in Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the gunman had an infatuation with extremism.
