Mickey Rooney Dies: Hollywood Star Was 93

The veteran Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney has died at the age of 93, police in Los Angeles say.

Rooney, whose career began as a child star in the 1930s, had been ill for some time, US entertainment media said.

Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith said that Rooney was with his family when he died on Sunday at his North Hollywood home.

Mr Smith said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Rooney was born Joe Yule Jr on September 23, 1920, in New York.

He rose to fame as the plucky lad in the Andy Hardy film series of the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Rooney has been described as 'the most talented actor that ever lived'

He also had notable turns as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) and in National Velvet (1944), opposite Elizabeth Taylor, as well as MGM musicals with Judy Garland.

Rooney more recently appeared in the 2006 comedy Night at the Museum," and in the 2011 movie The Muppets.

Credited with performances in more than 200 films, Rooney was awarded an honorary Oscar in 1982 for lifetime achievement.

He was also known for his colorful private life that included eight marriages.
